About

Cremorne Digital Hub Community Challenge

The Cremorne Digital Hub Community Challenge is a new initiative run by CDH that invites Cremorne’s most influential digital organisations to a themed, all-day hackathon-style challenge.

This challenge is ultimately about bringing Cremorne closer together; harnessing local digital expertise to brainstorm innovative solutions that can make a positive impact to the local and surrounding areas.

The Challenge

Wicked Innovations

The theme for the 2023 CDH Community Challenge is Wicked Innovations. For this challenge, teams will be attempting to solve wicked problems affecting Melbournians through innovative digital solutions and emerging technologies.

'wicked problem' refers to an idea or problem that cannot be fixed, where there is no single solution to the problem; and "wicked" denotes resistance to resolution, rather than evil. Another definition is "a problem whose social complexity means that it has no determinable stopping point".
What's the agenda for the day?

The CDH Community Challenge will bring together Cremorne’s most influential digital organisations in an all-day hackathon style challenge.

At a morning gathering at CDH, teams will draw one of three challenges. Teams will then return to their offices and have 6 hours to work up a 2-minute pitch to be presented to a high-profile judging panel at the end of the day, back at CDH.

A perennial trophy (and local bragging rights) will be awarded to the winning team, and vouchers from local Cremorne businesses awarded to the top pitches.

Following the judging, challenge participants and their leadership teams will be invited to an after party held in the CDH garage.

Overview of the day:

8.30 am – 9.45 am:

Breakfast, briefing, and random challenge draws at CDH.

10 am – 4 pm:

Teams break off to work on their assigned challenges.

4.30 pm – 6pm:

Elevator pitches, judging, and Q&A to decide winners.

6 pm – 8 pm:

CDH garage party.

What are the briefs for the Community Challenge?

Nice try, but the challenges for the hack day will be kept under lock and key to ensure an even playing field for everyone involved.

The briefs will be randomly assigned to each team upon arrival. Given the theme for this year's challenge, you can expect to be creating digital solutions relating to wicked social issues that are prevalent in Victoria.

We've made sure that all three potential briefs were created equal, and extra care was given to frame each challenge to ensure enough room for innovation and creativity.

What types of people should I have in my team?

It's recommended that teams are no larger than 6-8 people. We recommend a diverse mix of roles, personalities, skills, experiences, and professional backgrounds.

For the pitch component of the challenge, we recommend assigning 2-3 team members who have the best presentation skills, as the articulation of your idea will be an important part of the initial judging.

If your idea is shortlisted by the judges, you will need to allocate two representatives from your team that will answer rapid-fire questions in a Q&A format. The answers to these questions will be used to decide the winning team, as well as the runner-ups.
